Meet Me at the Muny...For Cake! (Cake 41)

Chloe and Holly have heard the advertisements for Tarzan, the Musical, which is currently playing at the Muny in Forest Park. They said that they REALLY wanted to go. So late this afternoon while they were playing, I bought tickets for tonight's show. Tom has told me numerous times that he considers any and all musicals to be an intolerable form of painful and unnecessary torture. So I knew better than to buy him a ticket. I decided to take the girls myself. It's their first Muny show!

We grabbed sandwiches from Jimmy Johns to eat on the way, and we arrived in time to pick up our tickets and find the Muny cake. Had I but known that the girls matched the cake exactly, we would have changed clothes first. Oh well...we may get another picture of this cake when we meet the cousins in Forest Park. Forest Park has a lot of cakes, though. It's impossible to do them all in one shot. Well...impossible with little ones when you're trying to experience some of the attractions with them.

Check out the giant palm-tree/jungley thing! That sets the mood for Tarzan!

Ah, I was wishing we changed clothes and put on sundresses...oh well. After our afternoon of finding cakes, the girls played so well together with their legos, I just let them keep playing until it was time to go. They still look cute in front of the backdrop!

There were lots of people walking around us, and waiting to take pictures of the cake, so we didn't get a good look at the back of it. We'll definitely have to pop back by.

Here we are, in our seats. When people sat in front of Holly, she started crying softly. I asked her what was wrong, and she said, "I can't see nofing!" Chloe couldn't see either. So the entire show, Holly sat on my left knee, and Chloe sat on my right knee. I had a wonderful view of the head in front of me, since I couldn't angle my head either way to see the show. That put a damper on things, but not too badly...sometimes I could see when the girls moved their heads a little farther to the side. And they could both see well, which was what we needed.

Here's a view of the set at intermission. You can see the crew members setting up the tent for the "Trashing the Camp" number which starts Act 2. The set represents the trees and vines in the jungle, and the whole thing rotates, which was cool! Overall, I would say it was a good animated-movie-to-musical adaptation. Some of the additional music was good, some was just "ok." The actor's voices were strong, and we loved Tarzan's "ziplining." Three different times in the show, Tarzan was on a wire harness. Two of those times, he came in from above the audience on the right side. The girls and I really liked that!

Chloe and Holly were definitely old enough to handle the whole experience. They loved their programs, and sat really well throughout the whole show. The couple next to us even complimented them on their terrific behavior at the end, and told me that they thought all of Holly's questions were darling. She asked me questions through the whole show, but not very loudly.

Now one of my worst faults is never being able to locate the car after attending something like this. It's a problem that has plagued my adult life. I knew I couldn't rely on anyone else to help me this time, so when we got there, I actually took pictures of where I parallel-parked my car along the road, and what the immediate surroundings were. Worked like a charm! I immediately caught myself going the wrong way. We found the car quickly, and Holly fell asleep the second she finished buckling herself in her seat. And I'm not exaggerating one bit with that, either. Holly is either "on" or "off." There's not much middle ground. Chloe had fun being Car DJ on the way home. The Car DJ gets to have the iPhone and choose the music for the ride. It's one of the perks of having a small car...the auxillary cord will easily reach to the back seat. We were home by 11:30. Whew! What a late night!

(And the title of this post, "Meet Me at the Muny" is part of the advertisement that you always hear on the radio. It's sung.)

**Updated to add some pictures from the show. These were taken last night by Jon Gitchoff, a journalist for the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
