West Alton Memorial Park...this cake has natural disasters commemorated on it.
Lewis and Clark State Historical Site
We had lots of fun looking around in here. I bought some good Lewis and Clark children's books, and Chloe had Holly had fun getting pressed pennies and exploring the keelboat.
The Confluence Tower
This is where the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers meet. We had fun riding in the elevator to the top!
The Mississippi/Missouri River system is the third longest in the world, following the Nile and the Amazon.
The Robert Wadlow Statue
Robert Wadlow was the world's tallest man. He was born and raised in Alton, Illinois.
Lincoln-Douglas Square
This is the site of the 7th debate between Lincoln and Douglas. Though Douglas won the senate seat, the series of debates put Abraham Lincoln in the limelight, and he was able to win the presidential election in 1860.
Alton Visitor's Center
I love the flowers!
We walked up the hill to Alton City Hall. Talk about steep hills! Wow! Chloe and Holly had a "we're tired from the walk up here" cake pose!
Piasa Bird
The cliff painting below is a recreation of Native American images of the Piasa Bird, a dragon-type of monster. The original work, which no longer exists, was discovered in 1673 by Jacques Marquette. (And just FYI, it's pronounced pie-uh-SAW.)
Holly was excited to find the word "the." She's learned that one!
We found nine cakes in Illinois today! There are only nine more Illinois cakes to go!
